Minsun was born in Seoul, to Yu Ahyoung and Yu Joonhyuk. His mother was an elementary school teacher while his father was a businessman who often travelled for work. At the age of 4, his father received a promotion at his company, and so his family moved to Vancouver, with his grandparents moving in a year later to help take care of Minsun.

Once he finally began attending school, his parents decided that he would go by the name 'Mason' (much to his grandmother's dismay). He attended French immersion from kindergarten all the way till grade 6, so he was pretty fluent in it. His dad enrolled him in hockey to keep him occupied in the winter, and soccer to keep him busy through the summer.

Halfway through grade 5, he noticed his mother began to stay at home rather than go to work. When he asked grandmother she would simply reply with, "your mother needs to rest. she isn't feeling well". At the end of grade 6, the family moved back to Korea, with Mason living with his grandparents instead. The few times he saw his mom was when grandma brought him to the hospital to visit her.

September 28, 2013, just days before his 16th birthday, his mother's condition had gotten worse. He spent his birthday in the hospital waiting room, waiting patiently to hear the news from his father. Up until that point, everyone had tried to keep it a secret from him. His father came down with the doctor and explained the situation. Having barely understood all the medicine talk, Mason was certain of a few things; his mother had stage 3 lung cancer, and that she was to start another round of chemotherapy.

Throughout high school, Mason was able to remain top 10 students in his grade, and began playing for the school's soccer team, while playing for the community hockey team. Thanks to his impressive foot work and shot accuracy, he was able to receive an athletic scholarship to Northern University, where his mom had studied. He wanted to follow in her footsteps and become an elementary teacher (and maybe a kid's soccer coach on the side). He was invited to join the varsity team, and spends most of his time either practicing or working as a pre-kindergarten teacher at a school nearby.
